Investigation on fluoride concentration in ground water by hydrochemical pathway

The present study includes ground water analysis of 11 Gram Panchayets (GP) of Tapan block in the district of Dakshin Dinajpur, West Bengal, India. Thirty-three water samples from different tube well sources of the block covering 11 GP’s are collected during the month of November 2018 and assessed its suitability in terms of drinking, irrigation and domestic purpose. Major cations and anions along with concentrations of fluoride are the prime focus of the analysis. From the analysis data all the parameters are found well within the limit except concentration of fluoride. Among the thirty-three water samples more than 18% of the total water samples are found fluoride rich, and exceeds the rejection limit of concentration of 1.5 mg/L as per World Health Organisation (WHO) and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) drinking water quality standard (10500:2012). Piper and Chadha’s diagrams are used to identify water type of the concern zone and found Fluorite (CaF₂) is the probable source of fluoride contamination of ground water.
