Caffeine--what it is, where it's found

Caffeine, a naturally-occurring stimulant belonging to the methylxanthine class, is found in as many as 63 plant varieties. Over 90% of the caffeine in soft drinks is added during processing, rather than occurring naturally. Two tables list the caffeine content of coffee, tea, cocoa and chocolate, and 18 popular drinks. Maximum caffeine intakes should not exceed 100-200 mg/day, but restrictions should be greater for certain individuals (pregnant and lactating women; people with high blood pressure, fibrocystic breast disease, ulcers). Reduction or elimination of caffeine intakes should be gradual to minimize withdrawal symptoms.(wz)
