Copper nitrilotriacetate: A potent therapeutic agent in the treatment of a genetic disorder of copper metabolism

Copper nitrilotriacetate (NTA) increased survival and body copper content in newborn mice with a genetic defect in copper metabolism. Copper-NTA supplemented to mice during pregnancy and lactation was superior to copper sulfate as a therapeutic agent. Aggressive copper therapy of neonates, or use of NTA alone, did not increase survival of mutant progeny. Therefore, prenatal intervention with copper-NTA may be useful in treatment of the human genetic disorder known as Menkes' syndrome, which has been linked to an abnormal copper metabolism that causes copper deficiency in cells of infants born with the disease.
