Effect of chronic intermittent exercise on biliary lipids, plasma lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase, and red blood cell lipids in rats

To study the mechanism of decrease in red blood cell lipids and changes in biliary lipids during physical exercise, a 4-month cross-over experiment subjected two identical groups of rats (A and B) to daily swimming either in the first 2 months (A) or second 2 months (B). Bile collected quantitatively at the end of the experimental period had lower concentration of cholesterol and phospholipids in exercisers B when compared to controls A. The bile of the exercisers showed a trend to an improved cholesterol solubility. Exercising rats A had lower red blood cell cholesterol and phospholipids at 2 months of the experiment. When former nonexercisers B exercised for 2 months they decreased their red blood cell cholesterol and phospholipids. Lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase in plasma was elevated in exercising rats. Regular exercise decreases biliary cholesterol and red blood cell cholesterol probably by promoting its transport from peripheral cells to the liver during the period of physical activity. These metabolic changes may have preventive potential against cholesterol gallstone formation.
