Smoking is hazardous
1985
A brief overview article discusses a number of separate health risks associated with cigarette smoking. These include: peripheral vascular disease; heart attack; angina pectoris; chronic lung diseases; and adverse effects on the circulatory system. Risks for teenagers and the synergistically enhanced heart attack risk of women who both smoke and use oral contraceptives also are discussed. The potential for heart attack even for low tar and nicotine cigarette smokers is cited. An argument for immediately stopping smoking is included.(wz)
