Energy expenditure in large and small eaters

A 7-day weighed dietary survey of 36 young men was used to identify two groups of 5 subjects who reported widely differing levels of energy intake but were of similar age, weight, height and estimated body fat content. The "large eaters" had an average energy intake of 15.3 (sd 2.3) MJ/d, while the "small eaters" recorded values of 8.5 (sd 1.0) MJ/d. Basal metabolic rate, measured by indirect calorimetry with a ventilated hood, was close to that predicted from weight and age for all subjects with no significant difference between the two groups. 24-hr energy expenditure, sleeping metabolic rate, and the energy cost of controlled walking and cycling, measured in a whole body indirect calorimeter, also showed close agreement in the two groups. Differences in recorded patterns of free-living physical activity could account for some of the differences in energy intake between the groups, but the large discrepancy between intake and expenditure suggests that 7-day weighed intake records overestimate the extent of variation in energy requirements between individuals.
