Effects of maternal ultraviolet B irradiation on vitamin D content of human milk

A study assessed the effects of a known amount of maternal ultraviolet-B (UVB) light irradiation on the vitamin D content of human milk in 5 white, middle-class, healthy lactating women (ages 26-35). Following whole-body UVB exposure, serum and milk vitamin D3 levels peaked within 48 hours and returned to baseline by day 7. The mean breast milk vitamin D3 peak value was 71 IU/L. The utility and implications of these results are discussed. (wz)
