Iron in human milk
1980
Fransson, Gun-Britt | Lonnerdal, Bo
Though human milk is low in iron, breast fed babies seldom suffer iron-deficiency anemia; in an effort to determine the reasons for this, human milk from 15 healthy mothers was analyzed. Considerable variation in iron and fat content was found; the percentage of iron bound to lipids was 15-46% and to low molecular weight compounds, 18-56%. Only a small amount of iron was bound to lactoferrin. These results do not explain the high bioavailability of iron in human milk.
