Wall-pore sensilla auricillica on the labial palps of Limnephilus marmoratus Curtis 1834 (Trichoptera: Limnephilidae)
2012
Faucheux, Michel J.
The sensilla of the 3-segmented labial palps of Limnephilus marmoratus are described by means of scanning electron microscopy. Three types of sensilla are present: aporous sensilla chaetica, uniporous sensilla chaetica and multiporous sensilla auricillica. The two types of sensilla chaetica are found all over the palp but the sensilla auricillica exist only on the terminal segment. The aporous sensilla chaetica, with a tactile function, and the uniporous sensilla chaetica, with a gustative function, intervene when feeding. The sensilla auricillica, which are considered as olfactive, appear to perform this function, rarely attributed to labial palps. These sensilla are mentioned for the first time on the labial palps of a trichopteran insect. Their morphology is identical to that of the sensilla auricillica present on the antennae of Lepidoptera, the sister-group of Trichoptera.
