Determining Acrylic and Modacrylic Fibers in Blends by Using N,N-Dimethylformamide or N,N-Dimethylacetamide

An extensive survey of fibers has demonstrated that N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) at 25° is suitable for quantitative analysis by selectively dissolving acrylic and modacrylic fibers in blended fabrics. Rayon triacetate is the only other common fiber dissolved by 2-6 hours of treatment at 25 °C. The effect of time, temperature, sample size, and water content in DMF are reported. A brief survey of fibers tested indicates that N,N-dimethylacetamide would also be suitable at 25° and 17 hours.
