Heritability and Genetic Advance for Kernel Weight in Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)
1970
Borthakur, D. N. | Poehlman, J. M.
The winter barley variety ‘Mo. B-475’ was crossed with the large seeded spring varieties, ‘Larker’ and ‘Trophy.’ Parents, F₁, and F₂ were grown in the greenhouse in the first experiment and parents, F₁, F₂, and F₃ progeny lines were grown in the field in the second experiment. Heritability of kernel weight ranged from 25.3 and 25.9% when measured by parent-progeny correlation to 43.1 and 46.0% when measured by variance of F₂ (broad sense). Observed genetic advance ranged from 6.5 to 14.2% depending on the method of calculation and compared closely to the predicted.
