Pedological Characterization of Fig Plantation in the Southeast of Elche (Alicante, S.E. Spain)

This study analyses the soils of the study area in an attemp to improve the cultivation of fig. For this, a representative soil profile, a hypercalcic Calcisol (FAO, 1998) and 13 samples of the arable layer were chosen for macromorphological study (according to FAO, 1990) and general characterisation (organic carbon, total nitrogen, equivalent calcium carbonate, pH in water and 1M potassium chloride, texture and electrical conductivity). All the samples were of the same type, a hypercalcic Calcisol (FAO, 1998) with an Ap-Ck type profile, the A horizon affected by ploughing and the C horizon representing the original material, above which calcium carbonate leaching has occurred. The soils are calcareous with a mainly low organic carbon and total nitrogen content. The pH in water is basic with a certain degree of alkalinisation being detected in some samples. The closeness of the pH values in water and KCl points to a good degree of basic exchange complex saturation. Of varying texture, the soils are affected by salinity and are mainly dedicated to the cultivation of salt tolerant crops such as fig and pomegranate.
