Plasma levels of tocopherol in sickle cell anemia subjects

Vitamin E deficiency is indicated by increased sensitivity of red blood cells to oxidative stress. In a study of patients with sickle cell anemia, 10 of 13 sickle cell patients had vitamin E deficiencies, as compared to none of 24 normal controls. Vitamin E deficiency is indicated when plasma tocopherol levels drop below 0.8 micrograms/g lipid. When sickle cell patients were treated with 150 IU vitamin E three times a day for one to two months, their plasma tocopherol levels approached those of the normal controls. It is possible that differences in the tocopherol content of plasma and red cells in different patients with sickle cell anemia may account for some of the variations observed in the clinical severity of this disease.
