Applications of correlation and regression analysis in assessing lentic water quality: a case study at Brahmsarovar Kurukshetra, India

The present study was conducted to determine the levels of water quality indicators and to study statistical interrelationships amongst them. An attempt has also been made to establish regression equations to provide a prediction of water quality prior to detailed investigation. The studies were conducted at the “Brahmsarovar” an important religious water tank at Kurukshetra in India, where mass bathing (about 3–4 lakh pilgrims) on new moon day is an important activity. Water samples under investigation were analysed for physico-chemical (temperature, pH, free Carbon dioxide, Dissolved oxygen, Biochemical oxygen demand, Total alkalinity, Hardness, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphate, Ammonia and biological characteristics (total plankton, total phytoplankton, total zooplankton, Species diversity indices of phytoplankton and zooplanktons). A significant (p< 0.05) positive correlation was observed between dissolved oxygen with total plankon and phytoplankton population and negative correlation was found between Dissolved oxygen and free carbon dioxide, biochemical oxygen demand and with ortho-phosphate and so on in other parameters. Multiple regression analysis showed that of among all the factors studied dissolved, biochemical oxygen demand and ortho-phosphate appears to be an important to predict the water quality. The validity of regression equation obtained was tested with the data and the relationships were found significant to predict water quality when one variable is known for similar habitats.
