A newly described baculovirus (subgroup B) from Ocnogyna baetica (Rambur) (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) in southern Spain

A new granulosis virus infection developing in fat body and other tissues of the winter webworm, Ocnogyna baetica (Rambur), is described. This ObGV virus was present with high prevalence in several sampled host populations in Southern Spain. The ovoidal virus inclusion bodies (capsules) measure from 329 X 187 to 417 X 185 nm. The virions enclosed singly within the protein matrix of the capsules are rod shaped and on sections measured from 194 X 46 to 229 X 42 nm. The biological activity of ObGV based on the LD(50) value (44 capsules per larva) is relatively high, while the LT(50) value (15-20 days) indicates that the virus causes slow-developing infection. The virus was not infectious to four tested noctuid species.
