Natural disasters such as floods and droughts have repeatedly impacted humankind over the ages. The number of major floods hain creased over the last decade. In summmer 2002, Austria also suffered severe flooding in many parts of the country and human settlements were strongly affected. This calls for implementing an integrated flood management. Such efforts must include direct protection and assistance measures as well as ecologically oriented precautionary measures. FloodRisk is based on an already available, detailed documentation of the developments during the 2002 event (HABERSACK and MOSER, 2003). The present paper is the next step in the analysis and is designed to provide the basis for strategic decisions in the future. For this purpose, the results from a total of 46 sub-projects in the fields of meteorology, hydrology, geomorphology, natural threats, economic aspects, law, regional planning and disaster control were incorporated. Defining the causes of the damage yields recommendations for future improvements (“lessons learned”). It also provides the foundation for effective implementation strategies in the framework of integrated flood management.
