The effect of undernutrition at the postnatal stage on the conversion of (1-14C)-acetate and (1-14C)-palmitate into the various lipid classes of the rat brain was examined. Albino rats were malnourished from neonatal to weanling stage by increasing the litter size. The results suggest that while the several enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of lipids from (1-14C)-acetate and (1-14C)-palmitate are not affected due to undernutrition, they may be present at even higher levels, due to compensatory mechanisms operating in the rat.
