Assessment of the fungicidal efficacy of biogenic SiO2 NPs in Eruca sativa against fusarium wilt

Nanotechnology is growing interest in the search for alternative plant disease management solutions to lessen reliance on chemical fungicides. Nanomaterials has played a significant role in agriculture for more than a decade. Plants use a variety of techniques to protect themselves from biotic stress. The purpose of this study was to assess the fungicidal efficacy of agro-waste mediated silica nanoparticles (SiO₂ NPs) compared to chemical fungicide against Fusarium oxysporum, the cause of Fusarium wilt in Eruca sativa, in both in-vivo and in-vitro. Biosynthesized SiO₂ NPs, which were then tested for antifungal activity. In vitro experiments demonstrated that SiO₂ NPs inhibited fungal growth. After exposure to SiO₂ NPs at ranging from 250 to 1000 mg/kg, there was a major drop in disease incidence (49.2 %) and severity (51.3 %). Photosynthetic pigments, polyphenol content, and antioxidant activity all increased after treatment with different doses of SiO₂ NPs. Plants treated with SiO₂ NPs had greater antioxidant and defense enzyme activity, such as superoxide dismutase and peroxidase, as well as defensive enzymes like polyphenol oxidase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase. The activities of β-1, 3-glucanase and chitinase were tested on E. sativa plants that were 10, 20, and 30 days old, respectively, in the control and disease states. The activities of pathogen-infected plants were found to be higher than those of control plants. The quantification of phenolics and flavonoids compunds and fatty acids of E. sativa were analyzed through HPLC and GCMS.
