Adoption of NFSM interventions by rice growers of Jammu Region

National Food Security Mission (NFSM) has already completed over five years in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and it is proposed to continue with some modifications. Therefore, it is important to have in-depth analysis of the programme. Thus, this study was conducted to find out the extent adoption of recommended NFSM interventions by the farmers. Multistage random sampling technique was employed for selecting the sample of 120 NFSM farmers. The selected respondents were interviewed using a structured interview schedule. The findings of the study revealed that majority (69.16 %) of NFSM farmers adopted Basmati-370 variety of rice, replaced seed after every two years (35.83 %), and did not adopt seed treatment practices. 47.50 percent of the NFSM farmers applied first irrigation after 2 days of transplanting and 50.80 percent of NFSM farmers stopped irrigation 30 days before harvesting. Majority of NFSM farmers applied herbicides, urea and DAPin rice field. MOP was not applied by the NFSM farmers. Only 24.09 per cent NFSM farmers applied recommended dosage of urea in Basmati whereas only 19.53 per cent farmers applied recommended dosage of DAP in hybrid varieties. 62.1 per cent NFSM farmers applied Butachlor herbicide in rice field and 71.18 per cent farmers applied its recommended dosage. Only 4.16 and 2.5 per cent NFSM farmers applied insecticides and fungicides in rice crop respectively.
