Child Nutrition (CN) labeled foods assure school foodservice personnel that these products meet meal pattern requirements for the Child Nutrition Programs. Manufacturer's recipes or product formulations are evaluated to determine the contribution a serving makes toward meal pattern requirements. Government agencies are responsible for ensuring the product is manufactured according to approved procedure and standards to conform to CN labeling rules. Two product categories are authorized: products that contribute significantly to meal/meat alternate component and juice drinks that contain a minimum of 50% full strength juice by volume. Products carrying the CN label are listed in USDA's "Food Buying Guide." Who approves CN labels, the advantages of using them, what they do and don't do and cost involve are discussed. Food service personnel can identify CN labels 5 ways: by logo; by a 6-digit product identification number; by a statement on the product label; by a combination of statement and logo; and by determining the month and year the label was approved by FNS. Only CN labelled food automatically warrant against audit claims. (kbc)
