Diet and the heart

The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) organized by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute is discussed. The NCEP is recommending a "Prudent Diet" for Americans to reduce saturated fats and cholesterol intake. Cause for concern regarding the prudent diet for children (it may compromise growth) and women (it may prompt a decreased intake of meats and dairy products which will reduce iron and calcium respectively-nutrients already low in women's diets) are outlined. The reduction of sodium in the diet is also a general health goal for the nation for heart disease prevention. Hypertension, and its risk factors, are discussed. The content of saturated fats and polyunsaturated fats in oils and the American Heart Association Phase I diet are presented.
