Salt sensitivity in humans is linked to enhanced sympathetic responsiveness and to enhanced proximal tubular reabsorption

A study of the effects of a 2-week moderate salt intake reduction in 52 normotensive medical students with/without a family hypertension history resulted in a significant blood pressure fall in 22 of the students (the "salt-sensitive" group; the remaining 30 being "salt-resistant"). The salt-sensitive group head a 2.5-fold higher incidence of family hypertension history, a significantly higher blood pressure, and a lower salivary Na level during their normal (high sodium) diet than the salt-resistant group. The implications of these results for the general population are discussed. (wz)
