Influence of management on the organic matter of a mineral soil1

While the quantitative effect of agricultural management on the soil organic matter has been well investigated, there is still a lack of information concerning its qualitative effects. In this study the influence of long-term, extreme different managements on the organic matter of humic and fulvic acids of a mineral soil was investigated using solution C NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. Despite twofold differences in the organic C content of the soil plots studied, the C NMR and FTIR spectra were similar, indicating no major effect of management on the chemistry of the fractions investigated. Beyond that, the percentage of polysaccharide carbon to organic C, and the percentage of α-amino-nitrogen to total N remain constant over the four plots which suggests that the mechanisms leading to loss of organic material in these fractions do not operate selectively.Consequently, the longevity of the soil organic matter cannot be explained on the basis of a particular stable chemical structure resulted from selective degradation of diverse compartments, but it is most likely a stabilization through interaction with the soil inorganic matrix.
