Assessment as exploratory research: A theoretical overview
1979
Burton, Nancy W.
Education is a complex procedure which defies scientific definition. One possible avenue to pursue in taking a broader look is exploratory research, which temporarily suspends analysis of operation and methodology to concentrate on conceptual matters. Exploratory research still utilizes models and data, the differing elements being emphasis and attitude. New attitudes are engendered by skepticism, reorganization of concepts at different levels, or applying techniques from other disciplines. Data analysis used inductively can provide new insights; data requirements are breadth, independence, continuity, accuracy and precision. These elements are present in the National Assessment of Educational Progress, and could be used to hypothesize not just trends but causative factors.
