Note: the relation between desorptivity and soil-water diffusivity

In the absence of gravity, the amount of water removed by desorption from a soil with uniform initial water content and constant suction at the surface is proportional to t. The coefficient of proportionality is called desorptivity, by analogy with sorptivity, for the infiltration of water. A formula is derived relating desorptivity to soil-water diffusivity. The accuracy of the formula is illustrated with numerical, theoretical, and experimental examples. We show that desorptivity is much smaller than sorptivity, and this difference explains why gravity effects are normally important much earlier for drainage than for infiltration.
