Efficiency of screening criteria for drought tolerance in chickpea (Cicer arientinum L.)

Drought is a major limiting factor for production of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) in most parts of the world. Drought tolerance in chickpea genotypes is measured either at young plant stage or at flowering stage. At young plant stage, drought is measured as the ability of the plant to grow under drought for longer durations of time whereas at reproductive stage, drought tolerance is measured based on plant vigour, flowering and pod set under drought conditions. The score to measure levels of drought tolerance at reproductive stage was devised by ICARDA (International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas) and is henceforth, referred to as “ICARDA score”. For agricultural crops, productivity is the major criteria and hence, levels of drought tolerance should be based on reduction in yield under drought. In the present study, we compared drought tolerance of 119 desi and 61 kabuli genotypes using three different criteria i.e. tolerance at young plant stage, tolerance at reproductive stage (ICARDA sccore) and tolerance based on reduction in grain yield under drought. Tolerance at young plant stage and that based on ICARDA scale did not always correlate with yield performance of chickpea under drought indicating that survival under drought at young stage or number of flowers and pods at reproductive stage might not be the suitable indicators of yield under drought conditions, Based on yield performance of 180 “desi” and “kabuli” genotypes of chickpea subjected to drought at flowering stage, an eight point scale for evaluating levels of drought tolerance in chickpea was also developed.
