Dietary management of diabetes mellitus
1984
Chait, Alan
A brief review discusses the goals and benefits of dietary therapy in diabetes management, with specific attention given to various nutrient components of the diet. The caloric content of the diet should be set for the individual patient. The timing of the meals is perhaps the single most important practical consideration in insulin-dependent diabetes patients. Diets that are high in carbohydrate and low in saturated fat and cholesterol are beneficial to diabetics; some simple and complex carbohydrates appear to be less harmful than others. Generally, diabetics should limit their salt and alcohol intakes. Controversies exist over the use of high fiber diets and sugar substitutes by diabetics. Alternative strategies for diabetes control include exercise. Such dietary practices in diabetes management need to be followed lifelong, and should consider the patient's food preferences, lifestyle, personality, and socioeconomic and ethnic factors. (wz)
