A Container for Studies of Root Response to Soil−Air Composition

Studies of root response to soil−air composition often require containers capable of isolating the root system, but not the aboveground plant parts from the atmosphere. Small containers for growing plants in the atmosphere while controlling the gas composition of soil and roots were constructed from plexiglass tubing. A description of the design and methodology associated with their use is presented in this paper. Their small size allows a large number of containers to be used where space is limited and keeps gas supply requirements at low levels. The system is shown to be capable of maintaining a constant gas composition over periods of several days.
