The no-fat fat: sucrose polyester
1987
Boyle, M.
A brief report highlights the discovery and utility of a commecially developed calorie-free fat substitute, sucrose polyester (SPE) (termed "olestra"), and that its FDA petition for its use in shortenings, oils, and salted snacks (filed May 1987) will require ca. 2 years for FDA approval. It is argued that SPE is totally indigestible by intestinal lipases, can be used for controlling satiety while controlling caloric intake, and that its ingestion (up to 60 g/day) resulted in a weight loss of 0.4 lbs/day in 10 chronically obese patients. The results of a study of hypercholesterolemic obese subjects in which SPE reduced low-density lipoprotein cholesterol also are described.(wz)
