Nutritional profile of selected adolescent and adult women athletes

Anthropometric data and food intake of 45 young Indian female athletes were determined and compared to non-athletes of similar background; all were in normal health. Amounts of cooked food consumed were recorded for 3 days; dried food aliquots were analyzed for protein and energy content. Daily activities were also recorded for 3 days; energy expenditure was measured on a respirometer. There were no significant differences between the 2 groups in hemoglobin levels or basal metabolic rate. There were differences in height (greater for athletes); weight (greater only for youngest athletes); arm and chest measurements (greater for athletes); and calorie and protein intake (greater for athletes, though energy intakes were less than ICMR recommended allowances). The athletes' intake of iron, retinol and niacin were less than recommended allowances, though adequate amounts of calcium, thiamine, riboflavin and ascorbic acid were ingested. The percentage of calorie intake from protein, carbohydrate and fat was normal.
