Prediction of body fat by skinfold caliper: assumptions and cadaver evidence

A study of data developed from direct measurement and dissection of 13 cadavers (7 females, 6 males) assessed the validity of assumptions made when skinfold caliper measurements of the thickness of a double fold of skin and compressed subcutaneous adipose tissue are used to predict body fat. The results indicated large variability in skinfold compressibility and skin thickness as a function of the body site being measured, suggesting the importance of conducting skinfold caliper measurements at a variety of sites (trunk and upper and lower limbs). Additional variability was found in the fat content of adipose tissue and in internal and subcutaneous fat depositions. The implications of these findings for improving the reliability of caliper measurements for assessing body fat are discussed.(wz)
