The effects of sucrose, 2,4-D, light and darkness on growth and catechin production by callus cultures from hypocotyls of Fagopyrum esculentum are described. The calli produced mainly (-)-epicatechin-3-O-gallate (1.5-6.0 mg g-1 dry wt) besides (+)-catechin and (-)-epicatechin (each 0.5-2.0 mg g-1 dry wt). Moderate sucrose (10-30 gl-1) and 2.4-D concentrations (2-5 mgl-1) improved growth and epicatechin-3-O-gallate content. Production kinetics of epicatechin-3-O-gallate differed in light and in darkness; the other catechins were influenced little.
