Mango germplasm--a global perspective

Recent mango germplasm collecting activities are described and a summary of the major ex-situ mango germplasm collections is provided. From these data, it is concluded that most of the cultivated Mangifera indica appears to be in ex-situ collections, but other cultivated and wild Mangifera species are not well represented. A detailed herbarium study has been carried out which shows the distribution pattern of 39 Mangifera species and this is being expanded with field surveys. On the basis of this study and field surveys, decisions can be taken on in-situ and ex-situ conservation of all Mangifera species. In order to standardize the characterization and evaluation of Mangifera germplasm, a standard descriptor list is being developed and attempts are underway to establish a world data base, possibly in cooperation with the ISHS Registration Authority for Mango. Present position about conservation of wild Mangifera species is also discussed.
