Caffeine has been a part of the daily diet of millions of people for many years. Its history can be traced back as early as the origins of tea in China around 4700 BC. Caffeine is consumed not only in beverages but eaten in foods such as baked goods, gelatins, puddings, chocolate, soft candies, and frozen products. Caffeine is a drug and can be found in many common medications, both prescription and non-prescription. Because of its long history of use in the human food supply, caffeine has been placed on the "generally recognized as safe" - the so-called GRAS list. Concern has been raised about the consumption of caffeine by pregnant women. Like other drugs it crosses the placental barrier to reach the unborn child. The caffeine content of beverages, food, soft drinks, and prescription and non-prescription drugs is presented in tabular form. (emc)
