Performance of changthangi x non-descript goats in Kargil (Ladakh)

The body weights and measurements, blood biochemical and physiological parameters, reproductive performance and slaughter quality of Changthangi x Non-descript goats under field conditions of Kargil district (Ladakh) were recorded. Males had significantly higher (P<0.05) values for body weight, chest girth, body length and height at withers as compared to their female counterparts. Blood glucose, total protein, blood urea nitrogen, hemoglobin and packed cell volume were 44.57 mg/dl, 7.28 g/dl, 20.07 mg/dl, 14.40 g/dl, 32.10%, respectively. Total erythrocyte and leukocyte counts were 9.41x10⁶/μl and 10.23x10³/μl, respectively. Age at puberty of male and females were 525.7 and 509.3 days while, weights at puberty were 19.25 and 17.31 kg, respectively. Age, weight at first kidding and inter- kidding period was 650.7 days, 20.72 kg and 192.5 days, respectively. Oestrous cycle length was 20.2 days; conception and kidding rates were 74.5 and 72.2%, respectively. Dressing yield (n=10) was 48.9% and edible offals were 8.57% in the Changthangi x Non-descript goats.
