Xanthium albinum (Widder) H.Scholz et Sukopp in Sugar Beet

Xanthium albinum in the conditions of the Czech Republic is included in the group of domesticated neophytes, which were brought to the country by transport of oilseeds and cereals. As an annual late spring weed it infests mainly root crops, especially sugar beet, maize, vegetables or other broadleaved crops. Due to the growing importance of the Elbe beet as weeds, the model experiments were aimed at determining the seed production and the ability of seeds to originate from different soil depths. Experiments have shown that plants can produce seeds as early as two months of age. During the whole vegetation, they produced up to 359 seeds. The seeds emerge best from a depth of 1–4 cm, in which seed germination exceeds 90% (emergence). The emergence is relatively good from a depth of 16 cm (38%). The results show that in the case of sugar beet infestation with weeds, monitoring and subsequent targeted weed control is necessary.
