New Application Possibilities of Hydrocyclones in Sugar Technology

In the food industry, hydrocyclones are used mainly in the sugar and starch industries, in potato processing and in the oil industry. They are simple and inexpensive; have low investment and operating costs and require minimum maintenance. Particular attention is paid to the evaluation of the RECLIME technology, the application of which reduced the consumption of limestone in Prosenice sugar factory to about 13 kg/t beet. The samples were analyzed using optical and scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, isotachophoresis, X-ray fluorescence analysis and X-ray diffraction. Granulometry of the precipitate and its chemical composition in the underflow and overflow from the hydrocyclone differed, with higher CaCO3 content and lower inorganic and organic non-sugar content found in the underflow, compared to the overflow leaving for filtration by filter-presses.
