Remote sensing for runoff predetermination in Sahel | Utilisation de la télédétection pour la prédétermination des ruissellements au Sahel

English. Rainfall runoff modelling is basically used to simulate the response of gauged calibrated catchments. However, the problem usually is to predict an output discharge without prior calibration hence from the catchment physical and geomorphologic charracteristics. Because Remote sensing is essentially limited to the asessment of the ground surface characteristics, it appears particularly suited to sahelian cathments for which the stromflow is generally accepted to be controlled by the soil toplayer. This paper presents the potential contribution of remote sensing to predetermine the discharge at the outlet of small sahelian catchments on an event basis. Results from a distributed approach that aims to upscale runoff from local remotly sensed " infiltration index " are discussed, and possible extensions are proposed. Finally, il is suggeted that a complementary global statistical approach tendind to downscale relevant hydrologic parameters derived from remote sensing could be very valuable from an operational point of view.

French. La modélisation pluie débit sert à simuler la réponse de bassins versants jaugés. Cependant, le problème hydrologique habituel est la prévision d'un débit de sortie sans calibration antérieure basé par conséquent sur les caractéristiques physiques et géomorphologiques du bassin versant. Etant donné que la télédétection est essentiellement limitée à la détermination des caractéristiques de la surface du sol, elle apparaît particulièrement adaptée aux bassins versants sahéliens pour lesquels on admet généralement que le ruissellement est contrôlé par la couche supérieure du sol. Cet article présente la contribution potentielle de la télédétection pour prédéterminer le débit de sortie de petits bassins versants sahéliens sur la base événementielle. Après détermination d'un index d'infiltration défini localement à l'aide de la télédétection, on discute sur les résultats d'une approche distribuée qui vise à agréger l'écoulement, puis sur des extensions possibles. Il est suggéré pour définir les paramètres hydrologiques à partir de la télédétection d'utiliser en complément une approche de type statistique globale par désagrégation. Cette complémentarité pourrait être d'une grande valeur opérationnelle.
