Electromagnetically driven liquid metal flows with strong free surface dynamics: Summary of the doctoral thesis submitted for the doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in physics, subfield: fluid mechanics

The thesis focuses on developing numerical models using open-source software to simulate different electromagnetically-driven liquid metal flows with pronounced free surface motion. The models are validated using laboratory experiments, which reveal interesting free surface dynamics depending on system parameters, ranging from relatively stable deformation and oscillations induced by direct current (DC) or low-frequency alternating (AC) magnetic field to diverse surface dynamics and instabilities in high-frequency AC field. These effects were successfully captured by the numerical models, providing an insight into the physical mechanisms. In addition to the laboratory systems, stabilisation of the innovative direct strip casting process using AC and DC magnetic field is demonstrated numerically.
