English. El inicio de la agricultura en la Américas tiene una historia de unos 12.000 años. Varias y muy importantes son las plantas que tras un largo proceso de domesticación pasaron a ser cultivos de singular importancia en el desarrollo y progreso de la humanidad. De todos los vegetales utilizados, y posiblemente cultivados, por los pueblos originales, existe un gran número de ellos que siguen siendo de interés por los habitantes de áreas rurales. Un ejemplo lo constituyen algunas especies de Prosopis (algarrobos- mezquites). Se describen algunos ejemplos de aprovechamiento actuales. Un producto de alto valor económico lo constituye la madera, por lo cual la explotación forestal está llevando a la extinción de los mejores rodales. La región chaqueña occidental es la más apta para iniciar un vigoroso plan de reforestación con algarrobos. Se inició un plan de largo alcance, que pasa por reconocer la biodiversidad existente, localizar las procedencias sobresalientes, recolección de germoplasma y ensayo de procedencias.

Spanish; Castilian. The beginnings of agriculture in the Americas has a history of some 12,000 years. Various and very important are the plants that after a long process of domestication culminate in being cultivations of singular importance in the development and progress of humanity. Of all the plants utilized, and possibly cultivated, by the original human populations, there exist a great numbers of them that continue being of interest for the inhabitants of rural areas. One examples contitute some species of Prosopis (algarrobos o mesquites). Some exmples of actual utilization are described. A product of put economic value is its wood, for which forest over-exploitation is threatening the extinction of the best stem. The eastern Chaco biogeographical provence is the most apt to initiate a vigorous plan of reforestation of algarrobos. Long-term plan has been initiated, that passes from recognition of the existent Prosopis biodiversity, localization of outstanding ancestral lineages, recollection of germplasm and trial of provenances.
