Bluefish, Pomatomus saltator, were sampled from the gulf of Tunis. Some anatomic and meristic characters were used in this study. The first dorsal fin counts 8 spines in all juveniles. Frequently the eighth spine, the most posterior, sinks and becomes embedded in the body muscle, or reaborbed completely in adults. Gill raker counts were made on the first branchial arch. The number of gill rakers decreases when the size of the fish increases. The rate of loss is greater in young fish than in older fish. The number of vertebrae is constant (26) for all sizes.
