Effet du Benzo(a)pyrène sur la communauté phytoplanctonique du canal et de la lagune de Bizerte | Effect of Benzo(a)pyrene on phytoplankton community from channel and lagoon of Bizerte (Tunisia)

La lagune de Bizerte devient un récepteur privilégié des micropolluants dont certains sont toxiques et peuvent constituer une menace pour l’équilibre de cet écosystème. Parmi ces polluants, les hydrocarbures aromatiques polycycliques (HAP) sont retenus comme des polluants prioritaires. La présente étude est une première investigation de l’effet d’un HAP, le Benzo(a)pyrène [B(a)py], sur la communauté phytoplanctonique au niveau d’une station lagunaire (station plus ou mois polluée par le B(a)py) et une station au niveau du canal (station la plus polluée par le B(a)py) en été (juillet) et automne (novembre) 2009. Pour cela, des communautés phytoplanctoniques, collectées des deux stations, ont été maintenues en culture pendant 6 jours sous trois différents traitements, un témoin (non contaminé) et deux contaminations avec 0,5 mg l-1 (traitement B1) et 1 mg l-1 (traitement B2) du B(a)py. Au cours des incubations, la chlorophylle a (Chl a), le taux de croissance phytoplanctonique ont été déterminés. Les résultats ont révélé qu’au niveau de la station canal, les deux contaminations par le B(a)py n’ont induit aucun effet ni sur la Chl a ni sur la croissance microalgale en novembre. La forte contamination a été même suivie par une stimulation de la prolifération du phytoplancton en juillet. Ceci suggère que le phytoplancton des eaux du canal serait plus résistant aux fortes concentrations en B(a)py, car cette station, située en face de la cimenterie de Bizerte, est parmi les zones les plus polluées par ce contaminant. Par contre, au niveau de la station lagune, au cours des deux mois, les taux de croissance duphytoplancton, après les deux contaminations, ont baissé. Ceci indique que les microalgues présentes dans cette station, milieu moins pollué que la station canal, seraient sensibles au B(a)py.

The Bizerte lagoon is becoming a key receptor for several micro-pollutants, which are sometimes toxic and may pose a threat to the ecosystem. Among these pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were selected as priority pollutants. The present study investigated for the first time the effect of Benzo(a)pyrene [B(a)py] on phytoplankton community in a lagoonal station (station moderately polluted by the B(a)py) and a station at the channel (station highly polluted by B(a)py) of Bizerte in summer (July) and autumn (November) 2009. For this, phytoplankton communities collected from these stations were maintained in culture for 6 days under three different treatments: a control (uncontaminated) and two contaminations with 0.5 mg l-1 (treatment B1) and 1 mg l- 1 (treatment B2) of B(a)py. During the incubations, chlorophyll a (Chl a), the growth rate of phytoplankton were measured for the three treatments. The results showed that at the channel, both contaminations with B(a)py did not induce any effect neither on Chl a nor on microalgal growth in November. High B(a)py contamination was even followed by a stimulation of phytoplankton growth in July. This suggests that the phytoplankton originated from the channel was more resistant to high concentrations of B(a)py, because this area, located approximately of ciment industry is among the most polluted areas by B(a)py. However, at the lagoonal station, the growth rates of phytoplankton declined after both PAH contaminations. This indicates that the microalgae present in this station, environment less polluted than the channel, were sensitive to B(a)py.
