Relationship between the physical and chemical properties of the wood of Vitex doniana Sweet

This study evaluated relationship between physical and chemical properties of Vitex doniana. Four (4) trees purposefully marked out at the free area of Olokemeji Forest Reserve, Ogun State, Nigeria were sampled at butt (50cm above the ground) and at 10%, 30%, 50%, 70% and 90% of merchantable height (MH). Specific gravity, radial shrinkage and tangential shrinkage were evaluated for physical properties while cellulose, lignin and extractive content were evaluated for chemical properties. Mean values for specific gravity, radial and tangential shrinkage were 0.40, 4.1% and 7.4% respectively while mean values for the chemical properties were 41.2%, 28.1% and 3.5% for cellulose content, lignin content and extractive content respectively. Both physical and chemical properties showed variation in the axial and radial direction. Volumetric shrinkage exhibited the best relationship (48%) with the chemical properties. Results of correlation analysis also showed that radial shrinkage had positive relationship at all sampling heights except with cellulose content at both 50% (23.6%) and butt (29.4%) and with extractive content (25.2%) at 90%. The study established that variation exist in the relationship between physical and chemical properties of Vitex doniana both in the radial and axial direction. The varying pattern of variation is germane for consideration in utilization approaches.
