A review of the four years mid-winter waterfowl census in Peninsular Malaysia from 1990-1993

Eight states comprising of 125 sites were censused between 1990 to 1993, all of which are located on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Perak and Selangor were found to be of the two most important states for wintering waterfowls. The highest counts were 33,222 birds in Perak and 16,943 birds in Selangor; more than 50% of which were waders. Between 60,000 to 220,000 birds comprising of 69 species from 11 families were estimated to be using the wetland. The highest number of birds counted were the Black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) followed by the common redshank (Tringa totanus).
