In the semi-arid tropics high and sustained agricultural production is hampered by many natural const raints. The SAT farmer mus t cope with the vagaries of a rainy season that is shor t and highl y unpredictable; intense rainfall interspersed with sudden droughts ; soils with low infiltration capacity and thus great water erosion hazard; and, finally, a high evapot ranspiration rate dur ing the growing season. In 1973, ICRISAT began its program to develop farming systems that will help increase and stabilize agricultural production through better use of natural, human , and capi tal resources i n the semi-arid tropics. Within this main program, the agrocl imatology subprogram deals with the characterization and quantification of weather elements (and climate) in relat ion to agriculture. Fol lowing 5 years of research in this area, ICRISAT sponsored an Internat ional Wor k shop on the Agroc l imatologi cal Research Needs of the Semi-Arid Tropics.
