The self-sufficiency level of rice in Malaysia has decreased and has barely been maintained at 70 percent in recent years. Because the government has established a target of 75% by 2025, rice-growing granaries have essential roles in fulfilling domestic demand. Nationwide, the average rice production yield has been sustained at merely 4.0 tons per hectare in 2022/2023. One main granary, IADA Barat Laut Selangor, located on the peninsula's west coast, achieved well over 7.7 tons per hectare at its peak in the primary season of 2020/2021. Some paddy farmers produce more than 10 tons per hectare, while it is difficult for others in the same area to achieve such results. This study attempts to reveal the variations in rice production yields and factors influencing the yield gap among paddy farmers. Authors conducted a series of surveys in IADA Barat Laut Selangor, which comprises eight sections. Authors randomly selected farmers from each section and interviewed 200 participants via face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire. The study results show that level of yields not only depends on input amount but also how farmers learn from trainings and exchange information with other farmers. This study contributes to the knowledge developing social capital; in this way, paddy farmers can gain better productivity, and the method can be extended to other granary areas.
