ANÁLISIS METABÓLICO Y REPRODUCTIVO DE LOS PÓLIPOS DE LA MEDUSA BOLA DE CAÑÓN Stomolophus meleagris (AGASSIZ, 1860) EXPUESTOS A DIVERSAS TEMPERATURAS

"En el presente estudio fueron investigadas las respuestas a la temperatura de la fase pólipo de la medusa Stomolophus meleagris mediante la evaluación de la tasa respiratoria, cuantificación de metabolitos secundarios y parámetros poblacionales tales como mortalidad, crecimiento, desarrollo y reproducción asexual. Se realizó un bioensayo en donde se expusieron a los pólipos de S. meleagris a diversas temperaturas (23, 27, 31 y 35 °C) durante 45 días, tomando registro cada 15 días. Entre los resultados obtenidos, se encontraron diferencias significativas en la tasa respiratoria por efecto de las variables tiempo y temperatura (ANOVA p<0.05). Las tasas respiratorias de los pólipos no presentaron variación por el efecto de la temperatura, pero si una variación directa en función del tiempo de exposición. Se cuantificaron metabolitos secundarios (glucosa, glucógeno y lactato), ATP y proteínas totales en el tejido del pólipo en donde se observaron cambios asociados a la temperatura. Se presentó una mortalidad de 33% para el tratamiento de 23 °C; 30% para 27 °C; 23% para 31 °C y 93% para 35 °C. Para determinar las respuestas reproductivas, se realizó un bioensayo durante 9 semanas de exposición (56 días) a las diferentes temperaturas antes mencionadas, adicionando un tratamiento a temperatura ambiente (20 °C ± 1 °C), encontrándose una mortalidad de: 33% para organismos sometidos a 23 °C, 36% para 27 °C, 50% para 31 °C, 100% para 35 °C y 66% en los organismos mantenidos a temperatura ambiente. El incremento en la temperatura indujo una mayor reproducción asexual; la mayor producción de pólipos hijos, podocitos y éfiras se observó a 27 °C. Se encontró que 27 °C es la temperatura óptima para el crecimiento, desarrollo y reproducción del pólipo debido a la producción exponencial de ATP, mientras que 35 °C fue una temperatura letal, estando fuera de la ventana de tolerancia térmica de la fase pólipo de S. meleagris."

"In the present study the responses to temperature in the evaluation of respiratory rates, quantification of secondary metabolites, and population parameters such as mortality, growth, development, and asexual reproduction at the polyp stage from the jellyfish Stomolophus meleagris were evaluated. A bioassay was made where polyps were exposed to different seawater temperatures (23, 27, 31, and 35 °C) for 45 days, taking record every 15 days. Among the results obtained, significative differences were found in respiratory rate due to the effect of time and temperature (ANOVA p<0.05). Respiratory rate on the polyps did not show variation due to the effect of temperature, but a direct variation as a function of exposure time. Secondary metabolites (glucose, lactate, glycogen), ATP and total protein were quantified in the polyp’s tissue, which showed changing concentrations relative to seawater temperature. A mortality of 33% for polyps at 23 °C, 30% for the treatment at 27 °C, 23% at 31 °C, and 93% at 35 °C was presented. To know the reproductive responses, a bioassay was accomplished during 9 weeks of exposition (56 days) to different temperatures previously mentioned and an extra treatment at environmental temperature (20 °C ± 1 °C) was added, finding a mortality rate of 33% was determined for 23 °C, 36% for 27 °C, 50% for 31 °C, 100% for 35 °C and 66% for the environmental- temperature treatment. The rise in temperature induced to a greater production of asexual reproduction; highest production of daughter polyps and podocytes was due to the 27 °C treatment. 27 °C is presented as the optimal temperature for the growth, development and reproduction of this species due to the ATP’s exponential production of ATP in this treatment, while at 35 °C polyp’s responses showed this high temperature is outside of their thermal tolerance window of the polyps as it represents a lethal temperature for the polyps of S. meleagris."
