The list of microalgal species was compiled anew to represent phytoplankton species reliably identified from the Black Sea plankton by the year 1964. The inventory includes 695 taxa of 149 genera. Compared to 1951, the total number of phytoplankton taxa has decreased to 469 and the quantitative proportion of taxa of main phytoplankton groups, excluding freshwater and freshwater-brackish, has slightly changed. In particular, Bacillariophyta have increased from 42.8 to 51.4% whereas Pyrrophyta, which increased by the number of taxa, have decreased from 42.0 to 34.8%. The combined portion of other taxa was estimated 13.8%.
