Though perhaps best known amongst geomorphologists for his work on shore platforms and lunettes, Edwin Hills also recognized stratigraphic evidence which demonstrates the great antiquity of substantial parts of the contemporary landscape. But Hills' most enduring direct contributions were in morphotectonics - the relationship between structure and surface at the regional and continental scales. This work in megageomorphology complements plate tectonics for in large measure it explains the shape and major relief of cratonic regions. It has also proved to be pivotal in mineral exploration and has resulted in the discovery of several mineral deposits, including the huge Olympic Dam ore body.
