Por más de 130 años la revista National Geographic ha cautivado a sus lectores con temas de naturaleza, cultura, historia y geografía. La publicación se ha adscrito a discursos que han circulado en diferentes momentos por los cuerpos sociales1 estadounidenses, y como evidencia ha dejado impreso el lenguaje que ha usado para sostener aquellos discursos. El interés de este ejercicio es observar el discurso, la estética que la revista ha instrumentalizado para hablar de conservación y el uso de la biodiversidad. Para observar esa estética, ese discurso, se utilizaron únicamente las portadas de la publicación, si bien estás no constituyen un cuerpo completo de análisis, su capacidad para, por sí solas, transmitir ideas las configuran como pieza fundamental dentro del análisis. Sumado a esto, el sistemático uso de fotografías en las portadas hace que en ellas no existan un solo sistema de lenguaje, sino que se funda todo en un sistema semiótico complejo. For more than 130 years National Geographic magazine has captivated its readers with themes of nature, culture, history and geography. The publication has been attached to discourses that have circulated at different times through social bodies1 Americans, and as evidence has printed the language that has used to sustain those speeches. The interest of this exercise is to observe the discourse, the aesthetics that the magazine has used to talk about conservation and the use of biodiversity. To observe that aesthetic, that discourse, only the covers of the publication, although these do not constitute a complete body of analysis, its ability to, by themselves, transmit ideas configure them as a fundamental piece within the analysis. Added to this, the systematic use of photographs on the covers means that in them there is not a single language system, but rather all in a complex semiotic system.
